P2P.ie Review: Uptown Harry, a half-brother to JP McManus’ four-time track winner Don’t Kick Nor Bite, had been campaigned in some top-notch four-year-old maidens during the spring. On debut, he finished third in the red-hot Borris House race which saw the two horses that beat him fetch £330,000 and £170,000 respectively subsequently, whilst he was also looked destined for third at Ballysteen on his second start behind a horse who fetched €180,000 before falling in the closing stages. Returning at Toomebridge on the opening day of the season, the Morozov gelding held every chance rounding the home bend, before just fading in the closing stages. Given the calibre of opposition that he had come up against to date, he cannot be overlooked.
P2P.ie Review: Time Is Honey made up good late ground to come from off the pace on her debut at Toomebridge around what is regarded as a difficult track for a horse to have their first outing, sitting in third when coming down at the final fence. The race is already working out particularly well in the short time since it was run, with the runner-up blitzing a Moira maiden, 24 hours before Time Is Honey herself became the second subsequent maiden winner to emerge from it. That success came in a big field Loughrea maiden where she showed a likeable attitude to out-battle an older and more experienced mare who proved to be a persistent rival all the way to the winning post.
P2P.ie Review: Monsieur D’Arque showed very positively on his debut at Bellharbour on the opening day of the spring 2018 campaign for four-year-old’s in early February, leading the field over the second-last, before giving way in the closing stages. Returning from an eight-month break to run at Loughrea earlier this month, the €50,000 store sale purchase held the advantage entering the home straight and had only just been headed by a well fancied €60,000 store purchase, when that horse crashed out at the last. To his credit, by the winning post he had more than doubled the two-length advantage he had held over the runner-up at the last, highlighting how he had stayed on strongly to the line.
P2P.ie Review: Buck’s Bin’s indicated that he was a very strong travelling individual when making his debut at the end of last season at Dromahane, finishing second, beaten just two lengths by the now four-time bumper winner Longhouse Sale. That form line entitled him to go very close on his next outing between the flags, which he more than did with an emphatic round of jumping from the front to score at Moira earlier this month. His fencing certainly struck all in attendance on the day, as he gained an edge on his rivals over each obstacle, to suggest that he could be a very exciting prospect when launched over fences under rules. It also must be noted that the French bred clocked a winning time 15 seconds quicker than the average of the day’s five other races.
P2P Review: The newcomer Mrsgrey was patiently ridden in what was quite a big field for a young maiden at this time of the year, and she still found herself in ninth position jumping the third-last, before showing a notable turn of foot to quickly make up a number of positions on the bend exiting the back straight. The eventual winner had already kicked for home by this point, and whilst it would ultimately prove a gap too far for her to bridge, she powered up the home straight, and only went down by a narrow margin in a tight finish. With both the first and third placed horses having the benefit of previous experience under their belt, she has to be given real credit for this debut effort.
UPDATE - The secon placed horse at Toomebridge, Getaman, was the subsequent 12 length winner of his Maiden Point-to-Point on his next start at Portrush on 20/10/18.
P2P.ie Review: Donatello Mail is out of a Cricket Hall mare who proved her resilience and toughness in a racing career that saw her win no less than 14 races, ten of which came on the flat, and it would seem that some of her flat speed has made its way to her third foal on what he produced at Toomebridge earlier this month. Making all of the running, the Zambezi Sun gelding produced a likeable turn of foot to stretch out the field along the back straight, before keeping on best of all to the line, around a sharp track. That pace will stand to him as he makes the switch to the track.
P2P.ie Review: Unexpected Depth made the perfect start to his racing career when winning at the first time of asking, with a taking display at Loughrea. This looked a competitive race and the principals came to the fore, including the eventual runner-up Pistol Whipped, who had been running a big race at the same venue in the spring before slipping-up. Unexpected Depth made strong progress along the back straight, before launching his bid by coming wide around rivals on the long home bend, before quickening best after the last to win going away. The success, which proved to be a first for his young 19-year-old rider, saw him beat well-bred individuals, with the second, third and fourth placed horses costing upwards of €30,000 each at the store sales.
P2P Review: It has been a remarkable start to the new season for Donnchadh Doyle, and Onthefrontfoot was the latest of his four-year-old maiden winners when getting his head in front at The Pigeons last weekend. Whilst this was his fourth outing, two non-completions had ensured it was just his second finish, and encouragingly, he has finished in the first two on both occasions. Having offered plenty of promise at Loughrea in May, he was sent for home at the third-last on his re-appearance at The Pigeons last Sunday, and his pace soon had many of his rivals on the back foot. The experience that he had built up allowed to hold off the challenge of a newcomer in a finish which saw the front pair pull nicely clear of the remainder.
P2P.ie Review: Having seemed quite unfortunate not to have made a winning debut at Loughrea in the spring when slipping-up whilst seemingly travelling best on the home bend, Pistol Whipped was unsurprisingly sent off as a warm odds-on favourite for his return to action at the same Co. Galway venue earlier this month. The Beneficial gelding held every chance straightening up to the final fence, only finding a promising newcomer one rival too good. Once his chance was gone with that horse on the run-in, he was not pushed out all the way to the line yet still finished within two lengths in second showing how close he is to a maiden success at present, with further improvement expected.
P2P.ie Review: In each of Heavey’s two outings to date, he has stayed-on strongly in the closing stages, most notably on his latest outing at Moira. On that occasion the Trans Island gelding was done no favours after landing over the second-last fence, meeting with trouble in running that saw him with upwards of eight lengths to bridge on the run for home. The downhill race for the line at Moira would not have aided him to make up that ground, but to his credit he more than halved the deficit, finishing fastest of all on the run-in to finish within two and a-half lengths of the form horse of the race. He is clearly a progressive individual, and having stayed-on strongly around two tracks that would not be the biggest of galloping courses on the circuit, there may well be a lot more to come from him.
P2P.ie Review: A well-bred €42,000 purchase, Rock On Rocco was certainly fancied to make a significant impact on his debut last March, when sent off as a joint-favourite at Liscaroll. The good-looking Shirocco gelding travelled strongly on the occasion, as he hit the front at one stage in the back straight, before tiring on the punishing climb into the home straight in what were very testing conditions. Unsurprisingly, the return from a summer’s break and the switch to a much sounder surface produced a very different result, as he held very strong claims coming to the last, ultimately finishing a close third, beaten by just over four lengths. Likeably, the front trio pulled a nice way clear of the next two finishers, who had been challenging coming to the last fence.
P2P Review: The connections of An Rinceoir Alainn could scarcely have hoped for the daughter of Gold Well to make a better debut, as having been patiently ridden throughout the opening two miles, the five-year-old showed a likeable attitude up the Tinahely hill that belied her inexperience to out-battle a far more experienced rival. That runner-up had brought form from an older maiden at Castletown-Geoghegan on the opening day of the season into the race, and she is also a 100-rated mare under rules following eight placed efforts inside the rails, to provide a good benchmark to the race, and the performance that the winner produced at the first time of asking.
P2P.ie Review: Mill Race King stepped up nicely from his debut sixth at Curraghmore in the spring to run out quite a comfortable winner of the five and six-year-old geldings’ maiden at The Pigeons last Sunday on his seasonal reappearance. Patiently ridden off the pace for much of the race, the son of Scorpion made considerable progress through the field at his ease going out on the final circuit to take up a narrow advantage after jumping the third-last. Quickening clear of his rivals from the back of the last, he beat a number of vastly more experienced rivals, including the previously Dromahane-placed runner-up. As this was just his second ever run, there is likely still plenty to come.
